Replacement turbine sought for Bitsch plant in Switzerland

Hydro Exploitation SA invites bids by 28 June for the supply of a Pelton turbine with a high-velocity oxygen fuel (HVOF) coating for the 340 MW Électra-Massa hydropower plant in Bitsch in the canton of Valais in southern Switzerland.

The tender notice published on 17 May also includes the option of the supply of a second Pelton wheel with HVOF coating and the study of an optimized hydraulic profile. The tender calls for the delivery of the Pelton wheel by 15 December 2020.

The Electra-Massa or Bitsch storage power station, which was commissioned in 1969, is equipped with three Pelton turbines, which produce average annual output of 564 GWh under a gross head of 750 m, with water supplied from the reservoir impounded by the Gebidem dam. The dam stores the water from the Aletsch glacier in the Alps. When inflows are high the underground hydropower plant can turbine 55 000 litres of water per second and the turbines can bear a sediment load of up to 40 tonnes per hour.
