The Kibuka (High Grand) Falls Multipurpose Development Project is a major infrastructure scheme that aims to enhance water resource management in Kenya under Vision 2030. It is planned to be located approximately 50 km downstream of the Kiambere hydropower dam along the Tana river on the border of Kitui and Tharaka-Nithi counties.
The project, with an estimated total cost of KES 337 billion (US$2.6m to 2.75 billion), is designed with a 115 m-high dam to impound a reservoir with storage capacity of around 5600 x 106 m³ for power generation, flood management, and large-scale regional irrigation.
The project is planned with a powerhouse with an initial installed capacity of 500 MW to provide firm, dispatchable base load power that supports frequency control, reserve margins, and secure system operations, particularly during peak demand periods. It aims to irrigate 500 000 ha of agricultural land, as well as supply domestic and industrial water across multiple counties and support the LAPSSET Corridor (Lamu Port-South Sudan-Ethiopia-Transport), which is Kenya’s second major transport and infrastructure development project. The project is also intended to mitigate seasonal downstream flooding in Garissa and Tana river counties, provides river regulation, and supports fisheries/aquaculture.
