Located in Bac Ai district, in the south-central province of Ninh Thuan, the open-loop project will be equipped with four 300 MW units. The project is expected to be completed by May 2031, with the first unit to start operating in December 2029. The three remaining units are scheduled to be commissioned in 2030. A ground-breaking ceremony was held in February 2025. The main civil works, which follows the completion of the outlet works of the project in March 2021, will be carried out by a consortium of seven domestic engineering and construction groups under a contract valued at VND 4334 billion (US$ 170 million) that was signed in February 2025 (See H&D Issue 2, 2025). The project is designed to provide peak load to the national grid, store energy through off-peak pumping, and contribute to frequency control, reactive power adjustment and spinning reserve services for Vietnam’s power system. In addition to facilitating the planned growth in variable renewable energy, the Bac Ai station will also complement the planned Ninh Thuan 1 and 2 nuclear power plants, all in Ninh Thuan province.
