The role of InSAR in monitoring dam safety and detecting precursors of failure

InSAR (Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar), a remote sensing technique, uses radar signals to detect millimetre-scale ground and structural displacements across both localized and wide areas, enabling comprehensive monitoring of dam infrastructure and the surrounding reservoir. This paper highlights the role of InSAR in improving dam safety by illustrating its use and benefits at two dams in Europe. In addition, analysis of the Maoxian landslide in China highlights the role of InSAR technology as a promising avenue for future early warning capabilities.
