A comprehensive shape optimization program for high arch dams

Stress analysis of arch dams is complex, and shape optimization has always been a key technical issue during their design and construction, especially for high arch dams. A comprehensive shape design method and optimization program (ADASO) have been developed to meet the requirements of building arch dams up to 300 m high in China, in which the trial load method and finite element method (FEM) are used together for shape design. This has been used for the shape optimization of many high arch dams such as Xiaowan (294.5 m), and Laxiwa (250 m), and the efficiency has been proved in these cases. In this article, the application at the Xiaowan arch dam is described. Results obtained from the trial load method and FEM were analysed and compared with the monitoring data during the initial operation period at Xiaowan.
