Building on strengths: The strategic extension of the Mount Coffee plant in Liberia

This paper outlines the proposed approach to the extension of the Mount Coffee hydropower project (MCHPP) in Liberia by 40 MW. The project is funded by the World Bank under the Regional Emergency Solar Power Intervention Project (RESPITE) and aims to enhance energy production and operational flexibility to support the growing electricity demand of the constrained Liberian electricity market. The extended MCHPP will be developed as part of a hybrid scheme, incorporating solar PV, and potentially battery energy storage systems (BESS). To meet the target completion date (end of 2028), the procurement of contractors is expected to begin later this year.
