Cemented material dams and their application

The concept of cemented material dams (CMD) was proposed in 2009 and published three years later [Jia et al, 20121]. Based on studies and the application of the concept at projects, Chinese technical guidelines were issued by the Ministry of Water Resources in [20142]. The concept and principles of CMD are summarized in this article. Progress on CSGR (cemented sand, gravel and rock) dams is introduced and the new concept of CSR (cemented artificial sand and rock) dams is proposed. The cross section design of the dams, material selection and quality control methods have been studied and laboratory tests on strength, impermeability, freeze-thaw resistance and so on have now been carried out; the results are presented in this paper.
