CFD study of a Francis turbine and validation with model test results

This study described aims to analyse and validate hydraulic parameters of a Francis turbine using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). Flow through the turbine was simulated with turbulence models which meet the current industry standards. Model test data, measured in accordance with the IEC 60193 standard [IEC, 19991], were used to validate the CFD results. Various simulation methods were considered, to allow for thorough investigations regarding applicability, workflow and accuracy of results. In terms of time and cost optimization, a variety of simulation approaches were investigated. Relevant assessment criteria for turbomachinery were considered, to estimate the influence of various simulation setups and mesh variants. In-house tools were used for the analysis and visualization of the CFD results.
