Construction aspects of the Nant de Drance project

With its ability to switch from the pumping to the generating mode and vice-versa within only a few minutes, the Nant de Drance pumped-storage scheme will play an important role in contributing to the stability of internationally linked power grids. This 600 MW project presents various interesting construction and design aspects, described here. This paper is intended to provide an introduction and overview of the scheme; further details of specific challenges are reported in the article on p39 of this Issue.
