Construction of the Upper Paunglaung RCC dam, Myanmar

The 140 MW Upper Paunglaung hydropower project comprises a roller compacted concrete (RCC) dam with a powerhouse located on the left bank at the toe of the dam, housing two power generation units. The project, on the Paunglaung river, upstream of the existing 280 MW Paunglaung hydropower plant, is 50 km east of Myanmar’s capital city, Nay Pyi Taw. The article outlines construction techniques and materials used for the RCC dam and appurtenant structures at the project, as well as challenges faced during construction.
