Current and future hydro development in Bhutan

Bhutan’s vast hydro potential, only 5 per cent of which has been exploited to date, is already playing a key role in the country’s socio-economic development. There are now ambitious plans to commission 10 000 MW (almost seven times the present installed capacity) by 2020. This paper discusses the plans and the associated challenges for the coming years.
