In recent years, extreme floods have become more frequent in Japan under a changing climate. Flood retention dams, which store water only during flood events, have been constructed to help reduce environmental impacts. This paper introduces the basic concepts and the developmental history of flood retention dams, as well as some current and planned projects in Japan.
