Dam safety and monitoring practices in Morocco

Dams are considered a precious national heritage in Morocco and play a strategic role in satisfying the increasing water demand. Their number will increase during the coming years; however, they require constant monitoring and regular maintenance as any dam failure or malfunction can have serious consequences for people and properties located downstream. With a heritage of major dams (there are more than 200 in operation, 15 under construction and three dams planned per year), The Kingdom of Morocco has developed significant expertise in the design, construction and maintenance of dams, which is reportedd in this paper.
