Design and functional requirements of rock traps for pressure tunnels

The design and functional requirements of rock traps for hydropower pressure tunnels continue to be misunderstood by the hydropower industry. The poor performance of a rock trap can severely impact hydropower generation and operating costs as a result of turbine runner damage caused by material transport through an unlined tunnel. This paper addresses and discusses the design and functional requirements of rock traps for hydropower pressure tunnels, to provide some greater insight to their importance for safe and economic operation. Results from CFD modelling of rock trap layout options are presented for a series of small hydro tunnels in western Canada.
