Increasing awareness and requirements for environmental protection have led to a trend away from using oil-filled turbine runner hubs. This paper discusses current design aspects of oil-free Kaplan runners, as well as the selection of materials to avoid high cycle fatigue, which can be an issue with Kaplan machines.
