Design, construction and operation of China’s Hongjiadu CFRD

The 180 m-high Hongjiadu concrete faced rockfill dam is the second highest CFRD in China, after TSQ-1 which is 178 m high. The site is in a very narrow river valley, with steep asymmetrical abutments, presenting challenges for the design and construction. Based on experiences from the previous high CFRDs, new concepts were adopted for Hongjiadu, and some creative new technologies were applied. So far, the performance of the dam has been very good. Maximum settlement is 133 cm, about 0.74 per cent of the dam height. There are no structural cracks in the face slabs and leakage is less than 20 l/s.
