EDP’s hydroelectric construction programme in Portugal

EDP operates in 13 countries and owns 23.5 GW of generating capacity, of which 7.6 GW is hydroelectric power. In 2007, the company initiated a construction programme in Portugal comprising five repowering projects and four new schemes, which includes the construction of seven dams and 11 powerhouses and the installation of 17 generating units, 11 of which are reversible. This paper examines the strategic importance of hydroelectricity in Portugal, the rationale for the growth programme undertaken by EDP and an overview of the projects.
