Angola is developing several major hydro schemes as part of the national Energy Development Programme, to satisfy the increasing demand for electricity in the country and to drive social and economic development. This article focuses on the hydro schemes under way on the Cuanza river in the northeast of the country. After a historical perspective, the authors describe projects currently under construction and outline the future plans for this important river.
