When dams are renovated and upgraded to enhance safety, work traditionally takes place from above ground, implying a number of limitations. This paper will demonstrate, with case studies, technical solutions achieved for dam stability improvements with a combination of mechanized tunnelling, followed by a subsequent drilling campaign.
