Innovative generator technology with a hybrid grid rotor for small hydro

The latest solution to overcome permanent magnet synchronous generator limitations in terms of reactive power control is to introduce a hybrid excited synchronous generator. The aim of this paper is to describe the performance and feasibility of such a system for small powerplants. As a case study, the main characteristics of a 1.2 MVA/3 kV/231 min-1 direct-drive hybrid-excited generator, at the Tagliuno scheme in Italy, are described.
