Lake Sarez: from the Dragon of Pamir to a development opportunity

Usoy is the highest landslide dam in the world. Since 1911, it has impounded the 17 km3 Lake Sarez, high in the Pamir mountain range. There have been fears about the safety of the Lake Sarez system since its formation. In 2004, the risk was rationalized and downsized by the World Bank-led Lake Sarez Risk Mitigation Project. Inevitably, residual uncertainties about the system’s response to another earthquake of similar magnitude to the originating one (7.7 M), remained. An earthquake in December 2015 (7.2 M) validated the risk assessment and confirmed community preparation and resilience to such catastrophic events.
