Mathematical modelling for the analysis of hydraulic structures

This article presents numerical simulations of complex free-surface flow over spillways, and considerations on the possibility of complementary or even the alternative use of numerical analysis for design purposes rather than hydraulic physical models, in cases when physical scale models are not economically feasible (small projects) or when time for the construction and testing of physical models is not available. Two projects are considered in the analysis; numerical results are compared with experimental results, and the differences identified are discussed with a view of practical applications for design purposes.
