Floods are usually discharged at dams by a single spillway. Using two or more spillways may improve safety and efficiency, and this paper presents various ways to achieve this. This paper collates existing knowledge about dams and spillways, discusses design criteria and spillway functions, and shows how solutions with two or three spillways could be developed.
