Optimizing surge tank layout for highly flexible hydropower

This article considers high-head hydropower schemes and pumped-storage schemes that are designed as flexible powerplants. Surge tanks are key structural elements in a hydropower scheme for flexible operation in power generation and pumping at hydropower plants with pressure tunnel systems. Surge tank layout and components can be further optimized to improve flexibility on new projects or for the upgrading of existing plants. Therefore, intensive and ongoing research activities can lead to major benefits as hydraulic behaviour is complex, interdependent, and the resulting design for each project is very site specific.
