Research for the upgrade of a Kaplan turbine at Krippau, Austria, and operational experience

The refurbishment of the Krippau run-of-river hydropower plant increased the efficiency in the relevant operating range of the turbine through a 4.1 m diameter runner replacement. The maximum discharge was increased from 120 to 135 m³/s and annual production by 4 per cent. Extensive numerical investigations were carried out to calculate the risk of cavitation of the turbine configuration as this risk would be the limiting factor for further upgrades.
