Reviewing the tensile strength across lift joints at RCC dams in Southeast Asia

A recent review into the direct tensile strengths of core specimens from the RCC dam at the Son La hydropower plant in Vietnam, using a 3D model of direct tensile strength, modified maturity factor and specimen age, revealed that the relationship between the RCC lift joint direct tensile strength and the lift joint modified maturity factor significantly deviated from the expected behaviour as observed in other RCC full-scale trial embankments and dams. This paper examines results from case studies of RCC dams at the Son La, Yeywa and Lai Chau hydro projects.
