Pumped-storage schemes have been identified as key role players in current and future energy generation worldwide, as a result of the global shift towards renewable energy generation, increasing energy costs and net zero carbon emission commitments to combat climate change. South Africa’s mountainous topography and vast land mass provide the elevation and area required for dam siting, as well as the current energy landscape; great potential exists for investment in pumped-storage plants as enablers for variable renewal energy storage in South Africa.
