Social and environmental impact assessment in dam development: Murum, Malaysia

Key aspects of the social and environmental impact assessment (SEIA) conducted for the Murum hydro project in Sarawak, Malaysia, are presented. Impacts relating to construction of the dam and the resettlement of affected people are reported. Emphasis is placed on ethnography studies and the importance of free, prior and informed consultation.
