The design of Spain’s La Muela II pumped-storage plant

La Muela II is a new pumped-storage plant, with 850 MW generating and 740 MW pumping capacity, which will complete the Cortes-La Muela hydroelectric complex owned by Iberdrola Generación. The project is on the river Júcar, 50 km from Valencia and 11 km from the Cofrentes nuclear powerplant operated by Iberdrola Generación, in the east of Spain. The first stage of Cortes-La Muela was built between 1982 and 1989, incorporating Cortes II, a conventional plant (246 MW), and La Muela I pumped-storage plant (636 MW generating and 540 MW pumping capacity), both in operation since then.
