The varying characteristics of the power sectors in the six Central American countries are discussed, and the author reflects on the role hydropower could play in meeting the rapidly increasing energy demand. Challenges to be overcome, to achieve the successful implementation of hydro schemes are also discussed, with some recommendations on the key issues to be taken into account.
