EGENCO to tender rehabilitation works and services for Kapichira I and Nkula B in Malawi

Malawi’s state-owned power producer, EGENCO, has invited potential contractors, suppliers and consultants to express their interest in bidding for a number of contracts to be tendered for the rehabilitation of the Kapichira I and Nkula B hydropower stations.

Bidding documents are expected to be available in March 2026, according to a general procurement notice issued by EGENCO on 12 February.

Rehabilitation of two of the southern African state’s critical power generation facilities, Kapichira I (64 MW) in Chikwawa District, which serves the southern region, and Nkula B (100 MW), Malawi’s oldest major hydropower station, built in 1966, aims to increase reliability and efficiency of power generation ensuring affordable and sustainable electricity and contributing to increased socio-economic growth.

Financing for the $118.7 million project is being provided by the African Development Fund (ADF), the concessional lending window of the African Development Bank Group, which approved a grant of $22.9 million in November 2025, and by the European Union and European Investment Bank (EIB).

Implementation of the project is expected to start in June 2026 and to be implemented over two years.

The project includes six components:

  1. Rehabilitation of 64 MW Kapichira I;
  2. Replacement and Rehabilitation of 100 MW Nkula B;
  3. Technical Consultancy Supervision and Procurement Expert Services;
  4. Environmental and Social Management;
  5. Project Implementation Unit Operations and Capacity Building; and,
  6. Corporate Social Responsibility.

Equipment suppliers will be sought for the rehabilitation of turbines, generators, electrical systems, auxiliary systems, SCADA and control systems.

The executing agency will also procure the services of consultants for the other components.
