Mauritius and Italy sign MoU to promote tidal energy

The MoU is the latest agreement signed by the Ministry of the Environment as part of its Small Islands in Development programme.

Italy’s Ministry for the Environment and Protection of the Territory and the Sea announced on 13 February the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Ministry of Energy and Public Services of the Republic of Mauritius for cooperation in the field of renewable energy, energy efficiency and the fight against climate change.

The Italian Ministry of the Environment will provide up to €2 million to co-finance the activities approved under the agreement and will support the participation of the private sector and civil society in initiatives and projects. The priorities for cooperation include the promotion of tidal energy and the establishment of a pilot tidal energy project, the use of renewable energy for pumping water and stabilization of the national electricity grid, sustainable waste management and the introduction of weather warning systems.

The MoU is the latest agreement signed by the Ministry of the Environment as part of its Small Islands in Development programme, aimed at helping island states that are vulnerable to climate change, with a strong emphasis on aspects related to renewable energy and efficiency energy.
