Voltalia secures permits for small hydro in Morocco

Morocco’s Ministry for Energy has approved permits for two small hydro plants being developed by international renewables developer Voltalia in the Middle Atlas region.

The permits for the (as yet unnamed) 9.8 MW and 7.2 MW projects follow positive technical approvals issued by the state power and water utility, the Office National de d’Electricité et de l’Eau potable (ONEE), regarding the connection of the plants to the national grid. The relevant water basin agencies have also approved the schemes.

Electricity produced by the two projects is to be sold under long-term power purchase agreements, which are currently under negotiation with private corporate clients. Voltalia said in February 2016 that it intended to build four small hydro plants totalling around 40 MW in Morocco.
