Analysis of surge waves and excessive flooding at hydropower dams

This study investigates the increasing vulnerability of hydropower dams to extreme hydrological events under climate change, with particular emphasis on surge waves, excessive sedimentation, and flood discharges exceeding design capacities. The evolution of design flood standards in Japan is reviewed, highlighting that many existing dams were constructed based on outdated criteria and may be insufficient to cope with current and future extremes.
