Adoption of a PKW spillway and inclined stepped energy dissipator at the Giritale reservoir, Sri Lanka

The authors describe the design process, including hydraulic and structural optimization to suit site conditions experienced during initial investigations and construction, at the Giritale reservoir in Sri Lanka. Works were undertaken to increase the storage capacity to help alleviate water shortages. The use of mathematical and physical models and flood routing are described. A comparison of the effects of desilting at Giritale, and installation of the PKW (the first in Sri Lanka), is also presented.
