Deadline approaching: Generation equipment sought for Chira-Soria pumped-storage plant on Gran Canaria

The project, which is to be built in San Bartolomé de Tirajana will use the existing Chira and Soria fresh water reservoirs to allow for greater integration of renewable energy on the second most populous of the Canary Islands.

Spain’s transmission grid operator Red Eléctrica de España invites bids by 11 September from experienced contractors for the supply of the principal generation equipment for the planned 200 MW Chira-Soria pumped storage hydroelectric plant on the island of Gran Canaria.

Bids are sought for the engineering, supply and supervision of the installation and commissioning of the generation train (comprising turbine, generator, full power converter, intake valves, guard valves and instrumentation and control system), according to a tender notice published on the EU’s procurement website, TED. The work is to be undertaken in two phases: a first phase of design and initial engineering, and a second phase of detailed engineering, manufacturing, supply and technical assistance. The work is expected to start in July 2021 and to be completed by the end of June 2027.
